Information for Under 25's
Drivers under the age of 25 may be allowed to hire a car, however, you should be aware that car hire providers can charge young drivers an additional fee to hire with them. This fee is called a Young Driver’s Surcharge which is applied to each of your rental days. This fee varies depending on the car hire provider and your age. To find out if your provider adds a Young Driver’s charge to your booking you will need to contact them. You can find providers who do not add this fee to your booking so you should have a look around to find out.
Hertz allow drivers aged over 19 and even provide discounts for students. Students can hire cars or vans at a reduced rate, but will still need to pay the Young Driver’s Surcharge.
Documents Needed
You must present your driving license upon arrival at the rental station in order to hire a car. You will need to provide the card license and the paper counterpart as this will indicate any driving offenses you may have which would prevent you hiring a car.
Your car hire provider may also request you provide proof of identification. Your passport would be satisfactory.
Insurance
You should be aware your own car hire insurance does not cover you for car hire insurance. Your car hire policy will provide Collision Damage Waiver and Theft Waiver to cover you if the car is stolen or damaged. However, this is not insurance. Car hire providers are entitled to charge a large excess which can be up to £2,000 if your car is stolen or damaged. You can avoid this charge if you buy a car hire excess insurance policy. You can either buy this from your car hire provider but it may be cheaper if you purchase car hire excess insurance from a specialist car hire insurance company. Buying car hire excess insurance will let you relax during your rental period, safe in the knowledge you are financially covered should anything happen to your hired vehicle under your care.
Tips
Car hire providers will try and get as much money from you as possible. Therefore you should be aware of their additional charges they can add to your hire.
- Car hire providers will try and charge you for any damage on the vehicle. If the vehicle is already damaged when you receive the keys you should inform the car hire provider straight away and make sure they document the damage. If you do not do this car hire providers may believe you caused the damage and charge you when you return the vehicle.
- Another way car hire providers make money is by charging you for fuel. If you return the vehicle with no fuel or a low level of fuel, car hire providers will charge you a price for them to fill up the car with fuel. This charge is often more than it would cost for you to fill up the car yourself. Therefore you should try and return the vehicle with the same amount of fuel as when you received it.
- You must always return your vehicle on time. Returning it late will often cause you to have to pay an additional day’s car hire. Sometimes providers provide a 59 minute grace period, which means you have an additional 59 minutes to return your car if you are late. However, you must check this with your car hire provider and not assume they allow a grace period.
